The withdrawal button for Shopify
Last reviewed on
If your Shopify store sells online to consumers in the EU, the withdrawal button has been mandatory since 19 June 2026 across the 27 EU member states (Directive (EU) 2023/2673; in Ireland, enforced by the CCPC). If your store does not have one yet, you are already past the deadline: every sale concluded without a button extends your customers' withdrawal right to 12 months and 14 days. Shopify does not provide it natively: it is up to you to add it. BackToMe installs the button on your theme in a single tag, without changing the rest of your store.

A single line of code
Add the button to your Shopify store in a single line
Create a free account, add your store, and paste the BackToMe tag into the theme.liquid file, just before the closing </head> tag. The public button appears on all your pages within minutes, without changing the rest of your store.

Why Shopify does not do it for you
Shopify is a global platform. The withdrawal button meets a European obligation (Directive (EU) 2023/2673), which applies across the 27 EU member states since 19 June 2026. Shopify does not include a feature compliant with this European framework, and the responsibility for bringing your store into compliance falls on you as the merchant.
In concrete terms, you need a tool that is added to your Shopify store to collect the withdrawal request, acknowledge receipt with an email your customer keeps and archive it, timestamped and impossible to alter afterwards: proof that holds up (before a judge or the CCPC). That is exactly what BackToMe covers.
Where the button appears on your store
The button appears on product pages, the cart, the customer account area, blog articles and your store pages. It does not appear during the Shopify checkout, and that is normal: the payment flow is served in a secure iframe that theme scripts do not touch.
The obligation requires the button to be accessible so you can exercise the withdrawal after the purchase, not during payment (Directive (EU) 2023/2673). Its absence from the checkout is therefore not a compliance failing.
How to install it
A single line of code in your theme
Create a free account on backtome.fr, add your store and paste the BackToMe tag into theme.liquid, just before </head>. The public button appears on all your pages, without changing the rest of your store. Create an account and install the button.
The same line across all your platforms
The same principle applies to other platforms (WooCommerce, Wix, PrestaShop): a single line to paste into the site's header. Managing and tracking withdrawals always happens on backtome.fr, whatever your platform.
What BackToMe takes care of
The compliant button on your theme
A visible, permanent withdrawal button, with a clear label ("Withdraw from the contract", "Withdraw and get a refund"), displayed on all your pages as the regulation requires.
The automatic acknowledgement of receipt
Every withdrawal request triggers an acknowledgement of receipt sent to the customer by an email they keep, which confirms their action has been recorded.
Timestamped archiving, proof that holds up
Every withdrawal is timestamped and archived, impossible to alter afterwards: proof you can present in the event of a CCPC inspection or a dispute.
The merchant notification
You are notified of every withdrawal so you can handle it within your deadlines. The refund itself is still carried out by you in Shopify or your usual payment processor: BackToMe never touches your payments.
Automatic legal updates
The button is served from backtome.fr: if the regulation changes, the label and the form are updated centrally and apply to your store automatically, with no reinstallation and no action on your part.
The risk if you don't
Since 19 June 2026, the withdrawal button has been mandatory across the 27 EU member states (Directive (EU) 2023/2673). Without a compliant mechanism, a B2C Shopify store is exposed to two cumulative risks: a fine from the national regulator (in Ireland, the CCPC administrative fine of up to €60,000, and up to 4% of turnover for widespread infringements under the EU Omnibus Directive (EU) 2019/2161) and the extension of the withdrawal period to 12 months and 14 days for poorly informed customers.
In concrete terms, a customer can then cancel an order up to a year after the purchase and obtain a full refund. Across a Shopify sales volume, the potential cost quickly exceeds that of getting compliant.
