Install the withdrawal button on Shopify in one tag

Since 19 June 2026, a Shopify store that sells in the EU must display a withdrawal button (Directive (EU) 2023/2673). Here is how to add it by pasting a tag into your theme.

Since 19 June 2026, the withdrawal button is mandatory in the EU on every store that sells to consumers, Shopify included (Directive (EU) 2023/2673, the EU withdrawal-button obligation that applies across the 27 member states). The good news: on Shopify, you install it by pasting a single tag into the theme. Here is how to do it, and why this tag is enough to be compliant.

What the button must do to be compliant

Adding the button is not just about showing a link. To satisfy the obligation, the mechanism must display on your store, trigger an acknowledgement of receipt to the customer on a durable medium, and archive each request with a timestamp of probative value. It is this proof, not the button alone, that a consumer-regulator inspection checks.

The Shopify checkout does not have to carry the button

On Shopify, the payment funnel is served in a secure iframe. The button therefore appears on the theme (product pages, cart, customer account) but not in the checkout. This is perfectly compliant: withdrawal is exercised after the purchase, not during payment.

Add the button in one tag

The method works on Shopify as on any site: you paste a line of BackToMe script into theme.liquid, just before </head>. The button then appears everywhere automatically, in the colours you have chosen.

Installation in three steps

  1. Get your tag in BackToMe (Site settings then Installation).
  2. In Shopify, open Online Store > Themes > Edit code, then Layout > theme.liquid, and paste the tag just before </head>.
  3. Open your published store: the status switches to “Detected” on the first load.

A useful reflex before any change: duplicate your active theme (Actions > Duplicate). That way you keep a one-click backup if something goes wrong. And make sure you are editing the theme marked “Current theme”, otherwise the tag will be pasted on a theme that is invisible to visitors.

Billing

A 7-day free trial starts the activation (0 € today, card required, cancellable in one click, 30-day money-back guarantee), then legal mode moves to 25 € ex. VAT/month per site, billed by Stripe in euros. The same account can equip several stores or several sites, on the same pricing grid.

Once the button is in place, seven checks let you confirm it is genuinely compliant, and not just present on screen.

Adding the button is not enough

Installation is only one step. Compliance with this EU obligation depends on what happens behind it: the acknowledgement of receipt to the customer, the enforceable timestamp and the archiving of each request for the legal retention period. That is what BackToMe handles for you, while the refund stays executed by you, in your usual tools.
