Your real questions, no dodging

The withdrawal button protects you too.

Last reviewed on

“Customers will abuse it.” “It'll slow my site down.” “What is this script?” These are the real questions we read everywhere, and they are legitimate. Here are the answers, no spin. The bottom line: BackToMe is not here to trap you, it is the independent and neutral third party that protects the honest merchant as much as the consumer.

Fear no. 1: abuse

“What if my customers abuse the button?”

It is the most widespread worry, and it is understandable. But let us set one thing straight: the right to withdraw already existed before. The button creates no new right for your customers, it only makes exercising it visible and traceable. And a customer who wants to abuse the system was already doing so by email, by phone or by threatening a negative review.

The real difference is that now every request leaves an incontestable trace. A customer can no longer claim to have asked earlier than they really did, invent a request that never happened, nor dispute their own one after the fact. The timestamped proof, impossible to alter afterwards, works for you as much as for them.

What you keep as protection

You keep the right to inspect the returned product and to reduce the refund if its value has diminished through handling that goes beyond what is necessary to try it out (under the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU). BackToMe does not refund on your behalf and decides nothing: it gives you the timestamped proof you need to assert your rights in the event of a dispute.

The technical fear: speed

“Is it going to slow my site down?”

No. The BackToMe line of code loads in the background: it never blocks your page from displaying. Your content appears normally, your checkout funnel is not slowed, and the button appears once the page has loaded.

  • Loading in the background

Your page displays without ever waiting for the button. Zero impact on speed when it opens.

  • A single line, nothing heavy

No heavy program loaded on your site: the line of code is light and self-contained.

  • Loaded once, kept in memory

The file is not re-downloaded on every visit. The effect on your site’s speed is negligible.

The fear of code: the script

“What is this script, and what does it touch?”

One line of code to paste onto your site, just one. Here is exactly what it does, and above all what it does not do.

What it does

  • Displays a floating button and a withdrawal form on top of your page.
  • Reads a site identifier to load the right configuration.
  • Passes a request to BackToMe, which timestamps and archives it.

What it does not do

  • It does not modify your code, your design or your catalogue.
  • It does not track your customers for advertising purposes.
  • It only collects what is needed to process a withdrawal.

You stay in control: removing BackToMe means deleting a single line. No intrusive integration into your back office.

The essence: neutrality

The independent third party that protects both sides

BackToMe is neither the seller nor the customer. It is an independent technical third party, published in France, whose sole role is to establish the facts without taking sides. People bend the truth when it suits them: a seller is never in a hurry to refund, a customer will not accept having their rights trampled. Between the two, you need someone neutral who records who did what, and when.

The consumer is protected

Their right is finally simple to exercise, and their request can no longer be “lost” or ignored.

The honest merchant is protected

They hold timestamped proof, impossible to alter afterwards, which they can present on the day of a dispute or a regulator's inspection.

It is this dual protection, through an independent and neutral third party, that makes BackToMe something more than a simple button. See also: why the proof holds up and the vision behind BackToMe.

The upside

The obligation is not your enemy

It gets presented as “one more constraint”. In reality, it works in favour of serious sellers. What damages online buyers' trust are the fly-by-night shops, the ghost customer service and the low-end dropshipping that vanish after a few months. A clear and traceable withdrawal mechanism makes that model much harder to sustain.

If you sell decent products and treat your customers honestly, you have nothing to lose here, quite the opposite: the proof becomes a signal of trust. Displaying a clear button and handling requests properly is a way of telling your buyers “I have nothing to hide”, and it is an argument your dubious competitors will not be able to make.

The rule cleans up the market. You may as well be on the right side, and show it.
