The right of withdrawal in figures
Do you sell online to consumers? Since 19 June 2026, a withdrawal button has been mandatory across the whole EU. Eight numbers to understand it all: figures harmonised across the EU by the Consumer Rights Directive (2011/83/EU), with Ireland (enforced by the CCPC) as the national example; each member state sets its own fines and regulator.

The withdrawal period
For a distance purchase, the consumer has 14 calendar days to change their mind, with no reason required.

Since that date, every site selling online to consumers must offer a withdrawal feature.

If the trader fails to inform the customer of their right, the period goes from 14 days to 12 months and 14 days.

What is the withdrawal period?
14 calendar days for a distance or off-premises purchase, from receipt of the goods or the conclusion of the contract for a service (Directive 2011/83/EU, art. 9).
What is the fine if there is no withdrawal button?
Sanctions are set by each member state. In Ireland, up to €60,000, enforced by the CCPC (Consumer Rights Act 2022); for widespread cross-border breaches, national authorities can impose fines of at least 4 % of turnover (Omnibus Directive (EU) 2019/2161).
How long does the merchant have to refund?
14 days from notification of the withdrawal, to the same means of payment as the purchase (Directive 2011/83/EU, art. 13).
