The withdrawal button on WordPress, in a single tag

Last reviewed on

If your WordPress site sells online to consumers in the EU, the withdrawal button has been mandatory since 19 June 2026 (Directive (EU) 2023/2673, across the 27 EU member states). Whether you use WooCommerce or not, it is up to you to add it. BackToMe does it in a single tag: you create a free account, you add your site, and you paste the tag into the header. A public button then appears on all your pages, accessible without logging in.

The risk if you do nothing

Since 19 June 2026, the withdrawal button has been mandatory across the whole EU. Without a compliant mechanism, a B2C WordPress site is exposed to two cumulative risks: a penalty from the regulator in the buyer's country (in Ireland, a CCPC administrative fine of up to €60,000, and up to 4% of turnover for widespread infringements) and the extension of the withdrawal period to 12 months and 14 days for poorly informed customers.

A customer can then cancel an order up to a year after the purchase and obtain a full refund. The potential cost quickly exceeds that of getting compliant.

Why a dedicated button, not a 'My account' page

WordPress is a general-purpose open source software, designed for the whole world. No native extension covers the withdrawal button, which meets a European obligation (Directive (EU) 2023/2673) that applies across the 27 EU member states. Bringing your site into compliance is down to you as the merchant.

The BackToMe button collects the withdrawal request, acknowledges receipt with an email the customer keeps, and archives it with a timestamp: proof that holds up (before a judge or the CCPC). It appears on all your pages, as the regulation requires, and it stays accessible without logging in, for every consumer, including those who ordered without creating an account.

What BackToMe takes care of

The compliant button across the whole site

A visible, permanent withdrawal button, with a clear label, displayed on all your WordPress pages as required by European regulation.

The automatic acknowledgement of receipt

Every request triggers an acknowledgement of receipt sent to the customer by email, which they keep as evidence of their action.

Archiving that stands as proof

Every request is timestamped and archived in a way that is impossible to alter afterwards: solid proof, ready to present to a judge or an inspector in the event of a dispute.

The merchant notification

You are notified of every withdrawal. The refund is still carried out by you (WooCommerce, Stripe, PayPal or your usual payment method): BackToMe never touches your payments.

How it works: the button in a single line

No theme changes, no database work. You paste a single line into your site's header:

  1. 1

    Create your BackToMe account

Create a free account on backtome.fr and add your site: you get the tag to paste.

  2. 2

Paste the tag into the header

Using a common injection extension (WPCode, Insert Headers and Footers), paste the BackToMe tag into the 'Header' field. You can also go through a child theme.

  3. 3

    The button is live

You start the 7-day free trial (card required, 0 € today, first charge on day 7, cancel in one click) and the public button appears immediately on all your pages, accessible without logging in. You are compliant, at full legal value.

The same line, across all your platforms

The principle is identical whatever your platform. The step-by-step detail is in the installation guide or on the dedicated WooCommerce page.

The account is free. The service is free to try for 7 days.

The BackToMe account is free and installing the button takes a single tag. BackToMe displays the withdrawal button and produces off-site proof around every request. The service is free to try for 7 days (0 € today, card required to start, cancel in one click), then moves to legal mode at 25 € ex. VAT/month per site.

Free: the account and the install

Free account creation, button installed in a single tag, without touching the theme. You add your WordPress site and get the tag to paste into the header.

The service: button + proof that holds up

The public button on all your pages, the acknowledgement of receipt via an email the customer keeps, timestamped proof that is impossible to alter afterwards, and archiving: proof that holds up before a judge or the CCPC. At full legal value from the very first day of the 7-day trial, then in legal mode.

The full detail of the plans is on the pricing page.

Public, no login: why it is mandatory

The right of withdrawal belongs to every consumer, unconditionally. The button must therefore be accessible to any visitor, including a customer who placed an order without creating an account (as a guest). A button locked behind a « My account » area would leave those customers with no compliant way to withdraw.

Hidden behind 'My account'

Guests and visitors who are not logged in cannot reach it. Risk of non-compliance.

Public BackToMe button

Floating on every page, accessible without logging in. Every consumer can withdraw, guests included.
