European obligation, Directive (EU) 2023/2673

One withdrawal button, in the language of every EU customer

Last reviewed on

Do you sell online to consumers in several EU countries? The withdrawal button is not a national quirk: it comes from a European directive, (EU) 2023/2673, and applies to distance selling across the whole Union. The 14-day right of withdrawal is harmonised by Directive 2011/83/EU, and works comparably from one member state to the next.

As soon as you sell in several EU countries, the information about withdrawal has to be understandable by each consumer, so in their own language. BackToMe covers all 27 EU countries, in the 24 official EU languages, and automatically applies each customer's own national law. The applicable law follows the consumer’s country (the Rome I Regulation (EC) 593/2008, art. 6).

The button, the form and the acknowledgement of receipt appear in the language of the customer’s browser, with nothing for you to configure.

One integration, several markets

  • Multilingual, Every EU customer gets the button and their acknowledgement in their own language (the 24 official EU languages).
  • Multi-site, one account, Manage several shops and domains from a single dashboard, with one central audit log.
  • Harmonised law, The 14-day withdrawal period is common across the EU: the same setup covers the button obligation on all your markets.

The withdrawal button across the 27 member states

The directive (UE) 2023/2673 requires the withdrawal button in the 27 member states. The right of withdrawal (14 days) is harmonised by the directive 2011/83/UE, but each country transposes it into its own law, with its own regulator and its own wording. For a sale, it is the law of the consumer's country that applies (règlement (CE) n°593/2008 (« Rome I »), art. 6). The status below records the national measures referenced in this table. For a concrete sale or enforcement question, the national law of the consumer’s country remains the relevant source.
